How unknown gunmen set 175 inmates free from Akure Prison, killed two people.

Unknown Gunmen, numbering about 30 at the early hours of Sunday invaded the Olokuta medium security Prison in Akure, Ondo state capital, setting about 175 inmates free.

The hoodlums who were fully armed, arrived at the prison premises around 12:05 am and started shooting sporadically, aiming at no particular person or persons, however, some of the prison officials on duty abandoned their duty post out of fear.

DailyPost learnt that after several attempts to blow open the main entrance into the prison failed, they blew up the wall leading into the cells.

It was gathered that a prison officer was hit by a stray bullet from the hoodlums while at the same time setting all the inmates at the prison free. Some of the prisoners however escaped with the gunmen.

The prison which is about a kilometre to the headquarters of the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army , Owena Barrack was riddled with bullets by the hoodlums, destroying all the streets lights leading to the prison.

A staff of the prison, who preferred anonymity said, in an attempt to escape from Prison environment, the inmates allegedly killed two people who were trying to fix their cars at the entrance of the road leading to the prison.

Speaking on the development, the state prison comptroller, Tunde Olayiwola described the attack as unusual, saying the authority of the prison will
soon bring the culprits to book.

Olayiwola said the incident happened around 12: 05 am, but dispelled the rumour that the attack was masterminded by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

He said ” we cannot specifically identify those behinqqd the attack, but the attack is unusual. One of our officer was injured during the attack and he
is in the hospital right now receiving treatment but I am assuring that those behind the attack will brought to book.”

The comptroller said the attack was the first of its kind in the history of the prison, saying the prison has not experienced such attack since its establishment.

However, an unconfirmed report said some of the prisoners who were set free by the hoodlums have already been arrested by security agents in the state.

It was gathered that some of the prisoners were picked by the security agents at some of the brothels within the capital city and neighbouring
villages near the prison, where some of the prisoners were identified and arrested.

A visit to the scene of the incident at the Olokuta prison by Dailypost showed that situation has been brought under control with a detachment of security agents at the prison.

The state Commissioner of police, Patrick Dokumor was one of the early callers at the scene of the incident while some government functionaries
led by the Attorney General of the state and commissioner for Justice, Eyitayo Jegede also visited the prison.

However the Public Relations officer of the Police Command in the state, Wole Ogodo confirmed the attack and said the police Command had contacted
the prison authority saying the information gathered on the jail break is still sketchy.

Ogodo noted that the incident has nothing to do with terrorism and called on the people of the state to go about with their normal duties, assuring
them that the police will continue to protect lives and property of the people in the state.

He also disclosed that all the security agents within the state are working towards tracking down criminals in the state.
